History: |
Starting on the East Coast and eventually ending on the
West Coast, was one of the first traveled routes in the United States.
This was called by most people as the "Coast to Coast Road", later named
Pike Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway. In the early days of the road, it was a
trail used by early Americans and travelers, by foot and horses. At
first it was a dirt road, later graveled and onto other improved
conditions. When the automobile came into usage, trips across the country
were made and tourists enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way.
There were other famous routes, but in this area the Coast to Coast Road
was traveled. Today some of the old road is still being traveled, but most
of it has been developed into smoother highways. Route 36 was the later
well known route, now it is 106 that passes through the village. In
Kinderhook the road traveled through the business district. As this year's
Color Drive is observed, a self-guided tour will be directed from west
side by the now Wharton place to the houses beyond Kinderhook as far as
the Clark farm going east. Kinderhook was named after Kinderhook,
New York, and although it does not have the businesses that it once had,
there is considerable activity in the village having a bank, churches,
school, restaurant, personal businesses, insurance business, post office,
museum, farm service, cemetery, excellent farming grounds, and trains pass
through several times a day. Come, enjoy the past with a colorful
drive in a small town with beautiful foliage abounding. Several
attractions are being planned to make the drive more interesting. For
those who still remember what a Klaxon was, perhaps you will hear a Klaxon
again. |

This is one of the many rock walls featured
by residential homes in Kinderhook. This particular wall is by the home
of James, Julie Foster and son James which displays the silhouette of the
state of Illinois in white rock. The rocks have endured the many elements
through the years and enhance the village of Kinderhook.
